Only in America!

In the "ya gotta be kidding" department - and right up there with legislation passed in Arizona and Tennesee prohibiting bars and other liqueur serving establishments from banning guns:

The bill (HB 315) would bar adoption agencies from asking potential parents whether they have guns or ammunition in their home. It passed its first hurdle, the Florida House Health & Family Services Policy Council, on a 15-0 vote. Sen. Thad Altman, R-Viera, is sponsoring the Senate version (SB 530).

The bill would delete questions about weapons ownership from adoption forms, but the news service said it also would require adoptive parents to acknowledge that they have received a copy of a state law requiring that anyone owing a loaded firearm keep it safely stored away from minors.

This flies in the face of the fact that while there is a constitutional right to bear arms - there is not one to adopt!

The only significant challenge came from Rep. Kelly Skidmore, D-Boca Raton, who said she didn’t agree with Horner’s view about the motives behind the agency’s questions.

“I do object to the assumption that the question was asked for nefarious reasons,” Skidmore said. “The question was asked … to make sure that children would be safe in an environment they’d never been before and where people had not had children before, (not) to document people and register weapons.”
Say what? Securing the safety of kids in new environments is a bad thing, why??  Has the Florida sunshine fried all their brains?  And mind you, Florida is the state that worked overtime to ban same sex adoption!
I guess guns don't kill kids, gas do!

UPDATE: NRA on Gun Rights and Adoption

As first brought to your attention here on Nov 7...

NRA wants adoption agencies to drop gun ownership questions

By Marc Caputo | The Miami Herald

The National Rifle Association is pushing legislation to ban adoption agencies from asking potential parents if they have guns and ammunition in the home.

NRA lobbyist Marion Hammer said adoption agencies are violating gun-owners' rights by asking about firearms in an adoption form. She said any request about gun ownership from an agency connected with government was tantamount to establishing a gun registry.

"Gun registration is illegal in Florida," Hammer said. "An adoption agency has no right to subvert the privacy rights of gun owners."

The issue flared up in Brevard County where a gun-owning couple took umbrage at a request from the Children's Home Society that they disclose if they had firearms before adopting a child.

The couple complained to a lawyer, who called Hammer. She said it would be easier to change the law rather than sue.

A spokeswoman for the Children's Home Society, Liz Bruner, said the agency asks about guns because it is required to by the Department of Children & Families.

My comment:

Gun ownership is a constitutionally protected right.

Adoption is NOT!

Those who want guns, have them. And they have that RIGHT. But they then do not have a right to adopt, as no one does and mothers who are making selections in open adoptions have every right to ask any screening question they chose. They have a right to discriminate against unmarried couples, or couples not practicing a religion of their choice. The agencies that represent those mothers have the same rights because adoption is all about the best interests of the child, not gun owners!

NRA =  NO RIGHT to ADOPT

Guns and Rosie Cheeks?

The NRA nutters are up in arms - pun intended - about adoption agencies ASKING prospective adopters if they own guns!

Seems they are so concerned about the RIGHT to bear arms, they have no clue that adoption is NOT a right for nyone - gun owner or not!

See this unbelievable discussion and add a comment if you chose.

Next addition to this assorted nut platter that now contains: religious right fundamental extremists, pro-lifers, adoption attorneys, baby brokers, flesh [peddlers, and now gun toters...next will no doubt be NAMBLA demanding they are not excluded or discriminated against as potential adopters!

Why not just hand out kids at WalkMart like a bonus coupon on each purchase!

I'm thinking kids need other kinds of arms....the kind that hold but don't kill or maim, or shoot bullets that do.

But over at Say Uncle where this is alo being discussed, Mikee says;

"I know folks who adopted. They lied to the questioners about everything that might disqualify them, in order to complete the incredibly inane checklists that would otherwise leave them waiting forever, or would stop their adoptions from being finalized.    This will be no different. Guns will be put in the attic or garage if there is a home inspection pre-adoption, and the PC answer will be given when asked by the PC adoption agency.    What are the adoption agencies going to do, ask ATF for a raid on your home to check?"
